Ingredients:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup quick-cooking oats
FILLING:
2/3 cup sugar
3 tablespoons cornstarch
1 1/4 cups water
3 cups peeled, diced tart apples
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
1. Combine the first four ingredients; set aside 1 cup for topping. Press remaining crumb mixture into an ungreased 9-in. pie plate; set aside.
2. For the filling, combine sugar, cornstarch and water in a saucepan until smooth; bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 1 minute or until thickened. Remove from the heat; stir in apples and vanilla. Pour into crust; top with reserved crumb mixture. Bake at 350 degrees F for 40-45 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Dutch styleDutch apple pie (appeltaart or appelgebak) recipes are distinct in that they typically call for flavourings such as cinnamon and lemon juice to be added. Dutch apple pies are usually decorated in a lattice style. Dutch apple pies may include ingredients such as raisins and icing, in addition to ingredients such as apples and sugar, which they have in common with other recipes.[2]
Recipes for Dutch apple pie go back centuries. There exists a painting from the Dutch Golden Age, dated 1626, featuring such a pie.
The basis of Dutch apple pie is a crust on the bottom and around the edges. This is then filled with pieces or slices of apple, usually a crisp and mildly tart variety such as Goudreinet or Elstar. Cinnamon and sugar are generally mixed in with the apple filling. Atop the filling, strands of dough cover the pie in a lattice, holding the filling in place but keeping it visible. Is this dutch apple because of the crumb topping? It just seems like basic recipe for apple pie. Am I missing something here? I am not being sarcastic, I really don't know how this is different from apple pie with crumb topping.

Thanks for the response. If I recall, growing up when mom would buy the TastyKake pies, the dutch apple had rasins in it. I just now thought of that. I prefer to make a crumb topping on pies, because it is easier.

I just always thought the crumb topping is what makes it "dutch" apple pie. So to me, the only differnce between apple pie and dutch apple pie is the top crust. I'm no expert on the subject, but I have baked a few pies in my time.

this is my husband's fav pie. with temps over 100, cannot have oven on now but I'll save this recipe for autumn. fresh apples then too. double yum!
