

1 dozen white eggs
white vinegar
optional white crayon
box of food colors
Gently place eggs in single layer in large saucepan. Add enough cold water to cover eggs by 1 inch. Cover. turn on heat to medium and bring to boil.
I boil my eggs for 10 min...feel free to adjust!!
Pour off hot water and rapidly cool eggs by running them under cold water
remove from water and allow to dry or dab dry with paper towel.
Mix 1/2 cup boiling water, 1 teaspoon vinegar and 10 to 20 drops food color in a heat proof cup. I line up coffee cups.
Repeat for each color Dip hard-cooked eggs in dye for about 5 minutes.
remove from cup when desired color is achieved.
Personalized eggs: Write initials, names or draw pictures on the egg with a white or light colored crayon before dyeing.
immediately clean out coffee cups and sink.
refrigerate eggs when done if you plan to eat them.

Oh my! My children will be 42 and 40 next month, the grands are almost 20 to 4. The memories of Easter eggs and the "messes" we made in the kitchen have lasted lifetimes! Enjoy....

dyeing Easter eggs used to be one of the highlights of the year (along with carving pumpkins and baking Christmas cookies.) kids are grown now and continue the traditions with THEIR kids! (....it'll happen to everyone one of these days.....)

You can do your own of those using this basic method, too -- just stir some glitter (fine or coarse) in with the egg, or dip and roll it in glitter when you take it out of the mix. You could also wrap an egg in a crumpled paper towel or old rag when or right after you dye-soak it, to get a tie-dye effect. Or add contrasting dye to some oil and swirl it onto the top of an egg-dye bowl/mug/whatever, letting the egg pick up a bit of that color on the way out. Or stick tissue-paper cutouts (those shaped craft punches can be great for this) onto the egg while it's still wet from the dye, and let them dry in place as added decoration. Or any other thing or combination you can come up with. Let your imagination run wild! 8)
