Homemade scouring powder
Combine nine parts whiting (from a hardware store) with one part soap granules. This mixture won't scratch surfaces as commercial products do, and it omits the unnecessary chlorine, which could accidentally combine with other chemicals -- like ammonia -- to produce dangerous chlorine gas.

I use baking soda. Sometimes I add Dawn dish soap to baking soda on greasy messes. I buy 12 LB bag baking soda in pool supplies at Walmart because I use it to clean so much.

Soft Scrub with bleach works great for us. One in the kitchen and a bottle for the bathroom. As for the danger of ammonia mixing with it - we don't use cleaners with ammonia.

Whiting
Whiting - powdered calcium carbonate - is a safe, chemically inert fine white powder. it is sold in hardware stores, paint stores and stained glass supply stores. Substitutes may not be chemically inert and should not be used. All I did was google this.

let me know how it works for you all. we have stopped using any powder as it seems to resolidify in the pipes and blocking plumbing. plus we have a tender septic system.

It would be helpful if you explained what "whiting" is for those of us who have never heard of it. But, thanks for the tip.

I have not heard of it either. I use Bon Ami. It used to come in a bar as well as a shakeer can (like comet). Bon Ami does NOT scratch. I bought 10 bars when a local hardware store went out of business years ago. Still have most of them.
